Offline Personal Finance App That Syncs When Reconnected
Travel Without Losing Track: Building an Offline Personal Finance App That Syncs When Reconnected
I was sitting in a rental apartment in Lisbon with no Wi-Fi, staring at the Mint app on my phone. "Update account, please," it said, and nothing happened. I couldn't see my balance. I couldn't add the café expenses I'd just incurred. The app became a brick.
That moment crystallized something I'd been wrestling with for months: every mainstream personal finance app treats the internet as a guarantee. Build on that assumption, and the moment connectivity drops, your entire product becomes a liability. You're not just offline—you're blind.
I decided Misto would be the opposite. Offline-first. No excuses.
What "Offline Personal Finance App That Syncs When Reconnected" Actually Means
I use that phrase intentionally because most finance tools slap "offline mode" on top of an internet-dependent architecture and call it a day. That's not what I built.
When you open Misto—on the web, or on the iOS or Android app when they land in the stores—everything you see lives in a local database called Dexie, built on IndexedDB. That's a browser or app database that sits on your device and persists even if you close the app or shut down your phone. Your transactions, budgets, goals, balances, and settings are stored there first.
You can add a transaction. You can update your budget. You can check your safe-to-spend number. You can export a report. None of it requires a server ping.
When you reconnect—a minute later, an hour later, three days later—Misto detects the connection and syncs. If you're on Premium, the sync is encrypted end-to-end with an AES-256-GCM cipher keyed to your password. I see zero of it. If you're on the free core, the sync is plain-text, but everything still syncs seamlessly across devices.
The Architecture Decision That Mattered
I could have used a third-party sync layer—something turnkey. But I wanted to own the offline experience completely. Three months into building, I had to choose between Realm, WatermelonDB, and just building sync from scratch on top of Dexie and my Hono backend.
I picked Dexie because it's lightweight, it has zero external dependencies on my server, and the API is clear enough that I could implement sync logic without fighting the framework. I wrote a conflict-resolution layer that tracks a logical timestamp and a device ID for every row, so if you add a transaction on your phone and your laptop at the same time, both changes merge without one overwriting the other.
That decision cost me two weeks of careful engineering. It was the right call. Dexie keeps the app under 180 KB gzipped, and the sync queue is dumb enough that if your connection drops mid-sync, the next reconnect just picks up where it left off.
What You Actually Get Offline
You get the full ledger. Every transaction you've entered is there, searchable, filterable. You get your budgets—I built the monthly expenses sheet to calculate against your local data, so you always know if you're over or under. You get your goals. You get your safe-to-spend calculation, which is the single number I think matters most: how much can you spend this month without breaking a goal or a budget?
You do not get live bank sync offline. That's a hard limit. I'm not pretending to pull live balances from your bank when there's no internet. That would be a lie. But you can load a CSV, a PDF statement, an OFX file—anything—and import it into the offline Misto ledger. That works without internet too.
When you reconnect and you're on Premium, you get the encrypted bank sync (read-only, opens your bank's login page in a secure in-app browser, pulls transactions client-side, stores them encrypted). The free core doesn't have that—you import manually or use the statement importer.
Why This Matters If You Travel
Frequent travelers live in a world of spotty Wi-Fi: airport lounge networks that vanish, hotel connections that die at 2 a.m., trains with zero coverage, regional apps that don't work across borders. When you're juggling multiple currencies, unfamiliar expense categories, and time zones, the last thing you need is an app that goes silent.
Misto doesn't go silent. You're never locked out. Your data is always there, always editable, always accurate. The sync is just a quiet hum in the background, a luxury, not a prerequisite.
How I Know This Works
I tested it the way I always test things: I went offline myself. I disabled Wi-Fi and cellular for eight hours, ran through every major flow—adding transactions, editing budgets, checking balances, exporting a CSV—and then turned the connection back on. Everything synced. No errors. No conflicts. No lost data.
I also hand-tested it on a real flight (airplane mode) from San Francisco to Denver. Added six transactions offline. Landed. Turned on Wi-Fi. Watched the data sync to my encrypted backup in about two seconds.
That's the promise: you can travel however you want, and your money is always in your hands, always available, always safe.
